#TheNewJimCrow ... continued
Well, okay, LET'S REVIEW, indeed: (You read previous post first?) We know that different communities are policed differently, based not on best practices, but based on social control goals and politics. We have discovered that there is certainly a quota system by which cops are evaluated. (See Anthony Schoolcraft, the stop-and-frisk trial, and so much more.) We know that NYPD brass has no problem continually telling the public a bold-faced lie when they claim it doesn't exist; they claim that officer evaluations are way more sophisticated. Sheesh. Why not tell me the moon is part of Pennsylvania, and that crap doesn't smell bad? We further KNOW that if you're non-white in this town, chances are you're going to have more frequent and more devastating police contacts.
All of these "we knows" are proven. But I'm supposed to suspend my disbelief when I'm told by the brass and Kelly and Bloomie that the only crime problems in my neighborhood are my teenaged kids and their cousins? No. The PROBLEM is an inequitable system that criminalizes me and mine, that rewards the officers that do this dastardly task best and punishes those cops who simply point the whole mess out. The individual officer driving around typically is a truly decent, hard-working guy who just wants to get back home, like most of us. The PROBLEM is the nature and culture of any organization that continues to believe that its best course lies in continuing to deny established facts. To be a lying Liar! It's unbelievable! I WONDER WHAT OUR MAYORAL CANDIDATES HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS DISCUSSION? Stay tuned.
